LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Jessica Hancock threw her first shutout of the season, and Kelly Harman homered to lead UC Davis to a 5-0 lead over BYU Saturday afternoon at the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. Later in the evening, UC Davis (4-2) was defeated by Oregon State, 2-0.
UC Davis outhit BYU, 10-3, as three Aggies collected multiple-hit games. Harman finished 2-for-4, including a fourth-inning two-run shot that put UC Davis up 2-0. Rachel Miller started the inning with a leadoff double. Sarah Axelson followed the homer with a single and came around to score on a double by Marissa Araujo.
The Aggies took the 3-0 lead into the sixth before adding a fourth run. With one out and the bases loaded, Jessica Gonzalez was hit by a pitch forcing home Harman. Araujo added a run-scoring single in the seventh that plated Miller for the game's final run.
In the circle, Hancock struck out six while scattering three singles in the complete-game effort. The senior struck out six and walked four o improve to 2-1 on the year.
The difference against the Beavers proved to be a pair of solo home runs. Audrey Roderfeld went deep in the top of the fourth to put OSU on top 1-0. Two innings later, Paige Low homered to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.
For the day, Axelson went 4-for-5 while Araujo and Harman each went 3-or-7. Erin Emde and Deanna Menapace each collected two hits.
UC Davis concludes play at the tournament on Sunday with games against Hawaii and Utah.
