MORAGA, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team completed a rain-shortened first day at the Gael Classic Friday in Moraga. The Aggies are one of nine schools with players competing in the three-day tournament. Freshman George Horowitz picked up a win in singles and doubles.
While 11 Aggies were scheduled to compete in singles, only two ended up posting a result before rain postponed play. Horowitz competed in the Blue singles round robin and defeated Mauricio Villa of Santa Clara, 6-0, 6-1. Nick Lopez took part in the other Aggie singles match and was defeated by SMC's Lucas Tirelli, 6-4, 6-2.
All five Aggie doubles teams competed earlier in the day. In Red doubles, Nick Lopez and Torsten Keil-Long were defeated in the round of 16 by San Francisco's Asaf Cohen and Thai Tu. Nic Amaroli and Tyler Lee were also downed in the same round.
Over in the White doubles round of 16, George Horowitz teamed with Jack Horowitz to defeat Youssef El Bouzkouri and Sherif Handy of Saint Mary's, 8-3. Chris Aria and Connor Coates were also victorious in the same round with an 8-4 win over Nevada's Alex Daruty and Gabe Kanzelmeyer. A fifth Aggie duo consisting of Josh Albert and Nick Hallchurch suffered a loss in White doubles.
A number of Aggies did not start their scheduled singles matches on Friday. That includes eight players in White singles along with another in Red singles. Action will continue Saturday before the tournament concludes Sunday.
