STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore driver Jacob Smith led all players with three goals to lift third-ranked Stanford to a 10-2 victory over No. 16 UC Davis in a non-conference collegiate men's water polo game at Avery Aquatic Center Wednesday night.
The Aggies slip to 12-14 for the season. The Cardinal improve to 17-1 overall.
For UC Davis, freshman Matt Vowell scored early in the second quarter, while junior Carlos Martinez finished a counterattack later in that frame.
Senior Ryan McCarthy added two goals for Stanford, which led 5-2 at the halftime break before holding its guest scoreless in the final two periods. Senior Jimmie Sandman manned the Cardinal cage for all but four minutes, collecting five saves.
Martinez' half-tank steal and subsequent goal put UC Davis within a two-goal deficit with 22 seconds remaining in the first half, but Stanford made the most of the brief possession. Aggie goalkeeper Kevin Peat caught a piece of a Peter Sefton shot attempt, but on the ensuing throw, Sefton assisted McCarthy on a buzzer-beater to send the Cardinal to the break with the 5-2 lead.
The Aggies return to action in a road contest at Pacific on Friday, November 13.
