MUNCIE, Ind. - Dominic Calegari scored a game-high 24 points to lead the UC Davis men's basketball team (3-3) past Ball State, 60-58, Saturday afternoon at Worthen Arena. Joe Harden added 17 points and nine rebounds, and Mark Payne finished with 11 points. The Aggies overcame a seven-point deficit while holding the Cardinals to just six field goals in the second half.
Jauwan Scaife led Ball State (2-2) with 14 points. He had an opportunity to give the Cardinals the win but missed an off-balance three-pointer as time expired.
Calegari made a career-high five three-pointers before fouling out of the game. UC Davis played with just nine players due to ongoing injuries and had three more foul out before the game ended.
The largest lead of the day was just seven as Ball State held that margin twice early in the second half. The Aggies battled back to eventually take a 55-51 lead after a Calegari trey with 3:22 remaining. A jumper by Payne at the 1:52 mark kept it a four-point lead, and the Aggies used free throws and a strong defense to hold off the Cardinals.
Harden went 1-for-2 from the line with 34 seconds left to make it 58-56. DeAndre Medlock did the same with 21 seconds left to put UC Davis up 59-56. Brawley Chisholm made two free throws at the other end to pull Ball State within one before Payne went 1-for-2 to account for the final score with 13 seconds left. The next BSU possession ended with Scaife's missed trey.
The Aggies shot 40 percent from the field and held the Cardinals to 37 percent. Ball State went just 6-for-19 from the field in the second half. Ball State owned a slight 34-33 edge on the boards, but UC Davis outrebounded the Cardinals 20-16 in the second half.
Ryan Silva and Todd Lowenthal remained out of action due to injuries, and Jacob Ranger also did not dress due to a groin injury.
UC Davis is next in action Dec. 2 when it hosts Sacramento State at 7 p.m.
