Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's soccer team scored twice in a three-minute span to defeat UC Riverside 2-1 in a Big West matchup Wednesday at Aggie Soccer Stadium. The Aggies improve to 5-7 overall and 2-1 in conference play while the Highlanders fall to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the Big West.

Both teams matched up evenly throughout the first half and UC Davis used a strong defense to hold off the strong UC Riverside attack. Cesar Diaz had three first-half shots for the Highlanders but was unable to find the back of the net and the UC Riverside defense held off an equally threatening Aggie offense. Several UC Davis shots were blocked by Highlander defenders and the Aggies' four first-half shots were unsuccessful.

In the 42nd minute, junior midfielder Tyler Wilson scored his first goal of the season to give UC Riverside the 1-0 advantage. Wilson received the ball along the left sideline and fired a powerful shot across the goal into the right corner. The shot deflected off a UC Davis defender and slid past Aggie goalkeeper Ryan McCowan and into the back of the net.

The Aggie offense struck back in the second half, forcing Highlander goalkeeper Cody Suppe to make five saves during the period.

In the 68th minute, John Joslin took a low hard shot at Suppe who used his feet to deflect it. The ball went straight back to Joslin who one-touched a second shot immediately, but Suppe was there to fall on top of it.

Joslin would succeed however, and in the 83rd minute, the redshirt freshman took a direct free kick from 20 yards out. The strike snuck through the UC Riverside defensive wall and into the lower right corner of the net to tie the score at one goal apiece. It was the third goal of the season for Joslin.

A mere three minutes later, senior Paul Marcoux took the ball down the sideline and found a streaking Dan Reese in the middle of the field. Reese one-touched the pass from three yards out to seal the win for the Aggies.

In the closing minutes of the game, the UC Riverside offense tried frantically to send the game into overtime but were unlucky. A shot by Chris Smith in the 87th minute was blocked and Michael Vega's attempt in the 88th minute sailed wide.

UC Davis continues their three-game homestand Saturday, Oct. 10 as they host Cal State Fullerton at 1:00 p.m.
