SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The UC Davis men's soccer team could not overcome a Cal Poly goal late in the first half and fell to the Mustangs 1-0 Sunday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. The Aggies are now 4-7-0 overall and 1-1-0 in Big West play while the Mustangs improved to 4-6-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference.
Both teams came out strong on offense and fired several shots in the opening minutes of the game. UC Davis goalkeeper Ryan McCowan was tested early when Cal Poly's David Zamora took a shot in the third minute which McCowan was forced to save.
The Aggies, however, answered with several attempts of their own. Mustang goalkeeper Patrick McClain saved a shot by Julian Godinez in the 18th minute and Chris Leer's try in the 23rd minute was blocked. Jason Santos and Paul Marcoux had back-to-back attempts in the 35th minute by Santos' shot was saved by McClain and Marcoux's sailed wide.
The Mustangs found the back of the net in the 43rd minute. Jacob Hustedt slid a pass across the box to Daniel Cumming who scored from three yards out to give Cal Poly the 1-0 advantage.
As the second half started, UC Davis tried to find the equalizer. Marcoux and Lance Patterson each had shots blocked in the 58th minute and a third shot by Marcoux was wide left at the 60:43 mark. Despite several attempts, however, the Aggies could not score and Cal Poly took the 1-0 victory.
Marcoux led the Aggies with four shots and four other UC Davis players had two shots each. McCowan tied a season-high with six saves in 90 minutes of action.
For Cal Poly, David Zamora led the offense with five shots while Junior Burgos recorded four. McClain finished with four saves.
Cal Poly outshot UC Davis 18-13.
The Aggies begin a three-game homestand Wednesday, Oct. 7 when they host UC Riverside at Aggie Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
