STANFORD, Calif. - Dahra Zamudio won twice in singles for UC Davis as the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships began Friday in Stanford. The Aggie sophomore is one of eight Aggies taking part in the annual tournament that features a singles and doubles draw. Ellie Edles and Herzyl Legaspi teamed to win twice in doubles.
In the singles round of 128, Zamudio defeated Stanford's Natalie Dillon, 7-5, 6-1. She followed that up with another win in the round of 64 after a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Portland's Stefanie Doolittle. Additional winners in the initial round of 128 for the Aggies included Legaspi and Desiree Stone before they fell in the following round.
On the doubles side, Edles and Legaspi cruised past Sacramento State's Zalina Nazarova and Milica Zivanovic , 8-2, in the round of 64. Up next was the duo of Doolittle and Stephanie Fuchs of Portland, and the Aggies posted an 8-5 victory to advance to the round of 16. Desiree Stone teamed with Zamudio to post a first round victory before the pair was defeated in the following round.
A number of Aggies, including Sidney Brady, Lauren Curry, Noelle Eades, Edles, and Shawdee Rouhafza, will take part in the singles consolation draw on Saturday. In the main draw, Zamudio will face Alex Poorta of Saint Mary's in the round of 32.
