Davis, Calif. - The 2009 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championship got underway Friday in Berkeley, and four members of the UC Davis men's tennis team won their opening round matches in singles. A total of nine Aggies are in action at the annual tournament with first and second round singles action taking place on the first day.
In the round of 128, Chris Aria, Connor Coates, Torsten Keil-Long and Hunter Lee all picked up wins. Aria came from behind to defeat Santa Clara's Nick Buckley, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Hunter Lee also needed three sets to get past Jose Izquiredo of Oregon, 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-3. Coates had an easier time against Eastern Washington's Chad Henninger in a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Keil-Long also overcame a first-set loss in a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) win against San Francisco's Einar Hart. The Aggies went on to compete in the round of 64 where they were all eliminated in straight sets.
The remaining five Aggies in action in singles included Nic Amaroli, Jack Horowitz, Tyler Lee, Nick Lopez and Toki Sherbakov. Following losses in the first round, those Aggies will begin play in the consolation draw beginning Saturday.
The first round of doubles, the round of 64, will begin Saturday as well.
