FRESNO, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team posted several wins Friday on the first day of action at the Fresno State Bulldog Classic. Chris Aria advanced to the quarterfinals of Flight B singles while Nick Lopez also claimed a singles victory. The Aggies also had a pair of doubles' teams advance in their respective flight.
Lopez was the lone Aggie in Flight A singles and advanced out of the initial round of 32 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Oregon's Jose Izquierdo. The Aggie junior was then defeated in the next round by UC Santa Barbara's Benjamin Recknagel, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Over in Flight B, Aria won twice on Friday. The first victory came against Cal Poly's Alex Sonesson, 6-3, 6-3, to propel him to the round of 16. It was there that he defeated Elnar Hart from San Francisco, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to a quarterfinal match on Saturday. Tyler Lee and Torsten Keil-Long were both defeated in their Flight B round of 32 matches.
In Flight B doubles, Nic Amaroli and Lee defeated USF's Ola Bakke and Jacob Hartwig, 8-5. Aria and Connor Coates used the same score to get by UCSB's Mathieu Forget and Max Glenn in the same round. Both Aggie tandems will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
UC Davis is one of several teams taking part in the annual tournament, which runs through Sunday.
