DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of No. 3 UC Santa Barbara Thursday afternoon in a Big West Conference matchup at Aggie Soccer Stadium.
The Aggies now stand at 5-9 overall and 2-3 in Big West Conference play while the Gauchos improve to 10-2-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.
Dan Reese led UC Davis with two shots while goalkeeper Ryan McCowan posted four saves in 90 minutes of action.
UC Santa Barbara got off to a quick start and scored in just the third minute of play. UCSB's David Walker served a cross into the middle of the box for Danny Barrera to half-volley the shot into the back of the net from 10 yards out. The goal was Barrera's fourth of the season.
As play continued through the first half, the UC Davis defense held off six shots from UC Santa Barbara to keep the score at 1-0 going into halftime.
Only three minutes into the second half, UC Davis would be forced to play a man down when Chris Beville was shown a red card in the 48th minute. Despite the disadvantage, the Aggies held strong and held off a strong UC Santa Barbara offense. Walker's back-to-back shots in the 54th and 55th minutes missed and an attempt by Nic Ryan at the 66:04 mark deflected off the crossbar and was cleared by the UC Davis defense.
Barrera scored his second goal of the game in the 74th minute with a low shot to the left corner to put the Gauchos up 2-0.
Joe Eubanks sealed the win for UC Santa Barbara with a 12-yard shot into the left corner in the 88th minute.
UCSB outshout UC Davis 15-6, but received 10 offsides calls while the Aggies had none.
UC Davis returns to action Saturday when they travel to Cal State Fullerton for a 7:00 p.m. match in Titan Stadium.
