Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's soccer team battled to a 3-2 double overtime loss against Cal State Fullerton Saturday in a Big West Conference matchup at Aggie Soccer Stadium. UC Davis falls to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in conference while the Titans now stand at 6-5-1 overall and 2-1 in Big West play.

Cal State Fullerton struck early as Jameson Campbell scored his first goal of the season. The redshirt freshman was on hand when a deflected pass bounced around in the box and he put it away from three yards out to give the Titans the 1-0 advantage.

UC Davis scored the equalizer less than 10 minutes later. Defender Chris Beville sent a long pass over the top of the field to a running Paul Marcoux who scored off a shot to the upper right corner. The goal was Marcoux's team-leading fifth of the season.

Later in the first half, a shot by Cal State Fullerton senior Shay Spitz was blocked and the follow up from Oscar Aguero sailed wide left. With time running out in the period, UC Davis' John Joslin took a shot that was high and the teams entered halftime tied with one goal apiece.

Both teams entered the second half with a strong offensive mindset as the Titans and the Aggies traded shots back and forth. Joslin tried a second attempt at 46:33 but Titans goalkeeper Trevor Whiddon was there with the save. Michael Denny answered for the Titans, but the shot was blocked.

Play continued until the 67th minute when Mario Alvarez blasted a shot from 18 yards out to give the Titans the 2-1 advantage. Spitz lined up to take a free kick and passed back to Alvarez who fired the shot which bounced off the right crossbar and into the back of the net.

Only three minutes later, UC Davis answered again. Marcoux moved the ball down the left sideline and slipped a pass across the middle to Rene Cuellar who one-touched the ball into the goal from three yards out.

The teams traded shots again throughout the remainder of the period in an effort to take the lead. UC Davis goalkeeper Ryan McCowan saved a shot from Kevin Venegas in the 71st minute and was there to stop an attempt from Aguero at the 77:12 mark. With time running out, Dan Reese tried a last-second attempt but Whiddon saved the shot to send the game to overtime.

The score remained tied after the first overtime period despite six shots from the two teams.

However, five minutes into the second overtime period, Celso Alvarez took a low hard shot into the right corner from just outside the 18-yard box to score the golden goal for Cal State Fullerton.

UC Davis posted 18 shots while Cal State Fullerton had 22. McCowan recorded four saves while Whiddon picked up seven. Marcoux led the Aggies with five shots, three of which were on frame, and Nick Posthuma and Spitz each had four shots.

"This was a great effort and the team played really hard," said UC Davis head coach Dwayne Shaffer. "This team showed a lot of character by going down twice and then coming back twice. I'm very proud to say that I'm the head coach of this team. We had our chances and they had theirs and unfortunately we couldn't get the win, but it was a great team effort overall."

UC Davis will host UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference matchup Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 3:00 p.m. at Aggie Soccer Stadium.
