STANFORD, Calif. - Seniors Marcos Orozco and Tyler Bernacchi and sophomore Barrett Abel won three matches to lead the UC Davis wrestling team to a perfect 3-0 showing during the Stanford Duals Saturday at the Burnham Pavilion.
The Aggies defeated Columbia (24-15), Drexel (21-19) and Pacific-10 Conference foe Stanford (28-12) to run their dual record to 6-2 and 2-1 in conference. UC Davis was forced to forfeit all three 133-pounds matches due to injury.
Orozco, currently ranked 16th nationally at 125 pounds, earned a 9-0 major decision and a 16-0 technical fall along with a 3-2 decision in his opening match. Abel (149) won his first two matches by fall along with a decision. Bernacchi (174) earned a pin, a decision and a forfeit. Senior Nexi Delgado (141) went 2-0 after sitting out the second dual.
Noack, senior Jon Clark (184) and sophomore Abe Otrambo (197) all finished 2-1 on the night to help led the Aggies. The only losses from Clark and Noack were one-point decisions.
The Aggies opened the day against Columbia and avenged their 2007 loss to the Lions with wins in six of the nine contested matches. Abel highlighted the match with a pin of Matt Dunn in 5:24. UC Davis benefited from a forfeit win at 174 pounds and one-point decisions from Orozco and Otrambo.
In the second dual against Drexel, Orozco opened things with a 16-0 technical fall over Michael Gomez. Abel earned his second consecutive pin in 2:36 over Robert Robinson while Noack pulled off his second straight win, this one by a 13-0 major decision over Scott Hunter, just missing the technical fall. Those two bonus-point wins helped the Aggies claim a narrow 21-19 victory as the teams split the 10 matches.
In the nightcap, the Aggies defeated the host Cardinal behind Bernacchi's pin over VIctor Haug in 2:28 and Orozco's 9-0 major decision over Matt Sencenbaugh. The biggest win came from Otrambo as he knocked off NCAA-qualifier Luke Feist, 7-5. UC Davis benefited from six wins in the nine contested matches and a forfeit win by sophomore Ricky Alcala at the heavyweight division to earn the conference win.
UC Davis returns to action in two weeks with duals at Cal State Bakersfield on Friday and San Francisco State on Saturday.
