DAVIS, Calif. - Shelly Moeller's header in the 94th minute lifted Navy past UC Davis, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action at Aggie Soccer Stadium. Rochelle VanBuskirk scored the Aggies' lone goal and picked up her second goal of the season. The loss drops UC Davis to 1-2-1 on the year while Navy improved to 2-1-0.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half. The Aggies were able to put more opportunities together, though, and held a 13-3 shot advantage through 45 minutes. UC Davis finally broke through five minutes into the second half when VanBuskirk scored off an assist by Marisa Boge. The goal gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
It stayed that way until the 71st minute when Sam Schroth connected from 10 yards out off an assist by Anastasia Abid. That tied the game at 1-1, which would prove to be the eventual score at the end of regulation.
The lone shot of the overtime period, which lasted less than four minutes, came as a result of an indirect kick by Kristen Laraway. Moeller then timed a header into the goal to give the Mids the victory.
UC Davis outshot Navy, 23-9, with VanBuskirk leading the game with seven shots. Boge and Samantha Faber each had four.
It was the second straight overtime game for the Aggies and third in four games to start the season. UC Davis is next in action Sept. 7 when it faces UCF at home.
