Final Stats

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal Poly built a 4-0 lead and held on for a 4-2 victory over visiting UC Davis Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series at Bob Janssen Field. Ashley Johnson homered for UC Davis while Melissa Pura and Krysten Cary each went deep for Cal Poly. The loss drops the Aggies to 23-34 overall and 8-10 in the Big West Conference. The Mustangs improved to 22-21 and 10-8, respectively.

Cal Poly started the scoring in the second when Stephanie Correia lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Cary. In the fourth, Cary led off with a homerun to make it 2-0. The Mustangs doubled their advantage an inning later on a two-run shot by Pura to make it 4-0.

It remained that way until the seventh as the Aggies made a comeback bid. Deanna Menapace led of with a single before Sarah Axelson grounded into a fielder's choice. Lindsey Jones entered the game as a pinch runner for Axelson, which set the stage for Johnson. The senior drove a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence to pull UC Davis within 4-2. It was her fourth homer of the year. With two outs, Trish Paine reached on a single but was stranded to end the game.

Each team collected eight hits in the game. Paine and Jessica Gonzalez both had two hits while Erin Emde, Menapace, Axelson and Johnson accounted for the remaining four hits. Alex Holmes, the reigning Big West pitcher of the week, started for the Aggies and suffered the loss.

UC Davis is next in action Friday when it begins a three-game series at Cal State Northridge.
