SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - UC Davis closed out its two-match road trip with a 6-1 loss at Cal Poly, Sunday afternoon, in a Big West Conference men's tennis match. For the second straight contest, Daniel Elefant was the lone winner for the Aggies. The loss drops UC Davis to 8-10 overall and 1-3 in the Big West. Cal Poly improved to 10-7 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
The Mustangs began the day with three wins in doubles to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Andrew Gerst defeated Henri Landes, 6-2, 7-6 (3), at No. 1. Cal Poly also claimed a straight sets victory at No. 2 as Darryn Young prevailed, 6-3, 6-0, over Michael Reiser. At No. 3, it was Drew Jacobs needing three sets to defeat Justin Garcia, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.
Cal Poly also posted a win at No. 4 when Alexander Sonesson defeated Nick Lopez, 7-6 (6), 6-3. The Mustangs' other win came from Blake Wardman on court 6.
At No. 5, Elefant defeated the Mustangs' Robert Foy, 6-1, 7-5. The win improved the senior to a team-best 11-6 in dual match play. Going back to the fall, Elefant has won 13 of his past 19 matches.
UC Davis returns to action Friday when it hosts Portland State at 2:30 p.m. at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
