Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Brent Morel and Wes Dorrell each drove in three runs, and Cal Poly used 17 hits and two three-run innings to take the second game of a Big West Conference baseball series, 10-5, in front of a season-high 756 fans during Picnic Day on Saturday at Dobbins Stadium. The Mustangs even the series at one game apiece heading into tomorrow's finale.

The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Aggies and drops them to 25-12 overall and 6-2 in conference. The Mustangs improve to 16-19 overall and 4-7 in the Big West.

"They (Cal Poly) were just better than us in all phases of the game today," said Aggie coach Rex Peters. "They're a good team. You can't dwell on this loss; we'll just come out tomorrow and try to get another victory."

Ryan Royster had his third consecutive multiple hit game and finished with three hits and two runs scored. Ty Kelly cranked out two doubles and drove in a run to record his fifth straight game with at least two hits. Jake Jefferies and Evan Hudson each had two RBI's in the game. Hudson had two hits in his return to the lineup while Jefferies drove in both runs without recording a hit.

Morel and Dorrell each had three RBI's to lead the Mustangs. Morel finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Justin Schafer's older brother, Logan, had a game-high three runs scored in the game. All nine Cal Poly starters had a hit while six different players recorded at least two hits. Starter Jared Eskew gave up four runs, but earned his third victory of the season while Derrick Saito earned his first save with three innings of relief.

Aggie starter Brad McAtee was touched up for eight runs, but struck out a game-high four batters in his third loss of the season.

Cal Poly jumped out to an early three-run lead after the first inning and never relinquished the lead. They led 4-0 after two innings and used three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to earn the five-run victory.

The Aggies scored two runs in the third inning to cut the lead in half at 4-2. Kelly hit his first double of the game to bring home the first run and Jefferies grounded out with a runner at third to score the other.

After giving up a single run in the fifth, UC Davis narrowed the deficit to one run, 5-4, after the fifth with two more runs. Jefferies had a sacrifice fly and Hudson singled in a run in the inning.

The Mustangs scored three runs in the seventh inning off a two-run double from Dorrell and an RBI single from Adam Melker. They added two more runs in the eighth inning following a dropped pop fly by the Aggie second baseman.

Hudson had another RBI single in the bottom half of the seventh inning to account for the final UC Davis run.

The two teams will decide the series tomorrow at Dobbins Stadium with a 1 p.m. start. That game will feature little league day at the ballpark.
