DAVIS, Calif. - UC Irvine defeated UC Davis, 5-2, in a Big West Conference men's tennis match Sunday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The No. 70 Anteaters won the doubles point before winning four out of six in singles. All but one of the singles matches went three sets, including four tiebreakers. Nick Lopez and Tyler Lee each picked up wins for UC Davis (9-12, 1-4 Big West).
UC Irvine (10-12, 3-1 Big West) won the first two doubles matches by identical 8-4 scores. Trevor Dobson and Douglas Taylor were the first to finish at No. 3 against Nic Amaroli and Kevin Liang. Alex Sundling and Zac Tsai followed with a win over Justin Garcia and Henri Landes at No 2. The Aggies' Daniel Elefant and Michael Reiser picked up an 8-7 (5) victory at No. 1 against Ajay Ahluwalia and Victor Lamm.
The marathon singles session began with a quick victory by Lopez at No. 5 as the Aggie freshman breezed past Tsai, 6-1, 6-2, to even the score at 1-1. The Anteaters picked up three straight wins to clinch the victory, but it would be a while before those scores posted.
Reiser retired in the third set against Lamm at No. 2 with Lamm leading 6-4, 3-6, 4-2. That win put the Anteaters up 2-1. At No. 3, Dobson outlasted Garcia, 7-6 (9), 2-6, 6-1, to make it 3-1. The clinching win came at No. 1 as Sundling won another three-set marathon against Landes, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1.
Lee was next to finish at No. 6 when he completed a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory over Ryan Mayer. The final match of the day to finish was at No. 4 where Stephen Stege fought off Elefant, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3).
UC Davis concludes its regular season Friday afternoon when it hosts UC San Diego on Senior Day. Elefant, Garcia and Landes will be playing for the final time at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
