SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Davis broke a 2-0 game open in the sixth inning with seven runs and scored six more in the seventh en route to a season-high 16 runs and a victory, 16-2, over UC Santa Barbara in the second game of a Big West Conference baseball series live on CSTV Saturday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
The win evens the series at one game apiece and improves the Aggies to 21-11 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The loss, which was only the second home defeat of the season for the Gauchos, drops UC Santa Barbara to 23-10 overall and 6-2 in conference. The game was featured on CSTV, which marked the Aggies first appearance on live video stream this season.
The Gauchos used three different pitchers in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh after starter Mario Hollands had allowed just two runs through the first five innings.
Kevin James finished with a game-high four RBI's off two hits while Jake Jefferies, Kyle Mihaylo and Evan Hudson each drove in three runs to lead the Aggies' offense. Ty Kelly cranked out a game-best four hits and drove in a run and tied with Jefferies and Ryan Royster to score a game-high three runs. A total of eight Aggies had at least one hit in the 17-hit game.
Brad McAtee pitched eight innings and allowed only two runs off six hits while striking out a game-high six batters to earn his fifth win of the season, which ties him for the team lead.
After scoring just two runs off four hits in the first game of the series, the Aggies exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning and added six more in the seventh to break open a two-run lead and earn their most lopsided win of the season. The Aggies capitalized on several Gauchos miscues in the sixth to record the big inning. Mihaylo homered to open the inning for UC Davis. Scott Heylman drove home the second run off a single up the middle. The remaining five runs came without hits during bases loaded situations. Jefferies was hit by a pitch to score a run and Hudson was walked to score another. Scoma reached on an error to plate another run and Mihaylo was hit by a pitch in the next at bat to bring home his second run of the inning. James rounded out the inning with a ground out that brought home the runner from third.
Kelly singled home a run in the seventh inning to start the Aggies' six-run inning. Jefferies and James both had two-run hits to highlight the inning. Jefferies' two RBI's came off his team-leading 11 double of the season. Mihaylo was walked again with the bases loaded to earn his third RBI of the game.
Eric Oliver doubled and drove in both of the Gauchos' runs. He doubled home a run in the seventh and singled home another in the eighth.
UC Davis also added single runs in the fourth, fifth and eight innings. James had an RBI double to put the Aggies up 1-0 in the fourth and Hudson had a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make the score 2-0. Hudson capped the Aggie scoring in the eighth with an RBI single.
The series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m.
