DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis overcame a doubles point loss to defeat visiting Sonoma State, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in a non-conference men's tennis match at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Aggies picked up four crucial singles victories to outlast the Seawolves in a match rescheduled from Feb. 24 due to weather. The win was the second straight for UC Davis, which improves to 8-6 on the year.
Sonoma State (4-5) gained the early advantage by winning the first two doubles matches that finished. Connor Olson and Jeff Stollberg started things with an 8-6 victory over Daniel Elefant and Michael Reiser at No. 2. The Seawolves clinched the doubles point when Brett McNulty and Andy Muesse posted an 8-5 win at No.1 over Justin Garcia and Henri Landes. The Aggies did get one win in doubles as Nic Amaroli and Kevin Liang defeated Logan Bailey and Jeremy Heckley, 8-7, at No. 3.
In singles, the Seawolves took a 2-0 lead when Olson defeated Reiser, 6-3, 6-1, to make it 2-0. The Aggies posted their first point when Hunter Lee defeated Quan Vu, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6. The score was tied when Nick Lopez, playing at No. 4, defeated McNulty, 6-4, 6-4.
UC Davis took its first lead as Elefant defeated Heckley at No. 5 by a score of 6-0, 6-4. That gave the Aggies a 3-2 lead and pulled them within a point from clinching the win. The next match to finish was on court 3 as Garcia outlasted Stollberg, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (2), to give UC Davis an insurmountable 4-2 lead. The Seawolves picked up their final win at No. 1 singles.
UC Davis now has its longest break of the season between matches as it will not play again until March 28 against DePaul in Fresno.
