TEMPE, Ariz. - Deanna Menapace hit her team-leading fourth home run of the season, and Erin Emde hit her first as UC Davis defeated San Diego, 4-3, Saturday morning. The win gave the Aggies a split of their two games on the second day of action at the Diamond Devil Invitation. Earlier in the morning, the Aggies were defeated by No. 21 San Diego State, 7-0.
UC Davis (14-13) took control of the San Diego game early. Michelle Espiritu led off and reached on an error. With one out, Julie Stauder singled to put runners at first and second. That set the stage for Menapace, who launched a three-run shot to left center to give the Aggies a 3-0 lead. With one out in the third, Emde hit a solo homer to center to increase the lead to 4-0.
The Toreros scored twice in the top of the seventh but could not get any more as Alex Holmes secured her second save in as many days. She sandwiched a groundout and pop-up around a walk as San Diego left the bases loaded to end the game. Jessica Hancock improved to 9-7 with the win. She struck out 10 against just two walks in 6.1 innings of work.
In the first game of the day, San Diego State (18-7) scored six times in the second inning. Three errors led to the final three runs of the inning being unearned. The Aztecs added another run in the fifth to account for the final run of the game. The shutout was just the third in 26 games for the Aggies this season.
UC Davis is 2-2 so far in the three-day tournament. The Aggies conclude play Sunday morning against Utah.
