FRESNO, Calif. - Nick Lopez and Hunter Lee posted exciting singles victories for UC Davis on Friday afternoon but DePaul captured the doubles point and four singles wins to beat the Aggies 5-2 in a nonconference men's tennis match played at Fresno State.
The loss snapped a two-match winning streak for UC Davis who was playing its first match since beating Sonoma State on Mar. 9. The Aggies fell to 8-7 on the season while DePaul improved to 12-7.
The teams split doubles matches at No.1 and No. 2 with Daniel Elefant and Michael Reiser beating Bartosz Jozwiak and Vanja Grgec 8-3 for the Aggies' win. However, a close 8-6 win by the Blue Demons' Jose Moncada and Ben Hartman over UC Davis' Nic Amaroli and Kevin Liang at the third position helped deliver DePaul a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Moncada, Austin Doerner, Hartman and Alasdair Gratz won at Nos. 1, 2, 4, and 5, respectively, for DePaul while the Aggies' picked up wins from Lopez and Lee - both in tiebreakers - for their two wins. Lopez beat Grgec 10-7 in their tiebreaker after they split their first two sets while Lee rallied from a 6-1 loss in his first set to beat Jozwiak 7-6 in the second and then 10-7 in their tiebreaker.
UC Davis will remain in Fresno for another nonconference match on Saturday when it faces host Fresno State at 2 p.m.
