FULLERTON, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by Louisville, 11-2, Saturday as it began the second day of action at the Worth Invitational. The Cardinals took advantage of four errors by the Aggies, which resulted in six unearned runs. Louisville scored in all but two innings of the six-inning game and collected 11 hits. Deanna Menapace and Ashley Johnson each drove in runs for UC Davis (10-9). It was the first of two games on the day for the Aggies.
Louisville (6-7) took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when a two-out single with runners at first and second scored both runs as a result of a fielding error on the play. The second run proved to be unearned, and the Cardinals added four more unearned runs in the second. The first two batters reached on errors, and Louisville took advantage with two hits later in the inning to take a 6-0 lead after two innings.
UC Davis put together its first threat in the fourth inning. Michelle Espiritu led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on an illegal pitch. After a pop-up, Julie Stauder had her second single of the day to put runners at the corners. Menapace followed with a sacrifice fly to score Espiritu. With two outs, Johnson delivered a run-scoring single to drive in Stauder and make it 6-2.
Louisville scored three more times in the bottom of the fourth and added two runs in the sixth to end the game.
Sarah O'Neill and Erin Emde also collected singles for the Aggies as the team finished with six in the game. Alex Holmes suffered the loss. Just three of the nine runs she allowed were earned in four innings of work. Holmes struck out four and walked two. Emde worked in relief.
UC Davis will next take on Notre Dame Saturday evening at 6 p.m. before closing out the tournament Sunday against Texas Tech.
