STOCKTON, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by Pacific, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in the Big West Conference opener for both teams. The host Tigers claimed the early lead by taking the doubles point before winning three out six in singles. Daniel Elefant won both of his matches for UC Davis, which dropped to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the Big West.
Pacific (2-1, 1-0 Big West) was helped by two wins in doubles. David Gonzalez and Artem Gramma started things with an 8-6 victory at No. 1 over Justin Garcia and Henri Landes. Elefant and Michael Reiser were next to finish with a win at No. 2. The duo defeated Renan Delsin and Chase Oliphant, 8-5. The clinching doubles match came down to No. 3 where Pedro Toledo and Vegerd Veskimagi outlasted Hunter Lee and Tyler Lee, 9-7.
Elefant was the first to finish in singles after a 6-2, 6-0 win over Toledo at No. 5. The win tied the match at 1-1 prior to the Tigers regaining the lead when Gramma defeated Landes at No. 1. Pacific upped its advantage after Delsin defeated Garcia, 6-2, 7-6 (4), at No. 3.
The Aggies' Nick Lopez kept his team alive with a win at No. 4. The freshman posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Veskimagi to pull UC Davis within 3-2. Shortly after that, Pacific clinched the win when Gonzalez defeated Resier, 6-4, 7-5. Tyler Lee accounted for the final Aggie point when he came from behind to defeat Oliphant, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
UC Davis is next in action Feb. 16 when it begins a three-match homestand against UC Riverside.
