CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by San Diego State, 8-2, Saturday night to close out the second day of action at the Cathedral City Kick-Off. The Aztecs broke open a 1-0 game with five runs in the fifth inning. Michelle Espiritu had one of four Aggie hits on the night and drove in both runs. Earlier in the day, UC Davis (2-2) defeated Colorado State, 5-3.
SDSU (3-1) scored the first run of the game in the third inning on an RBI-single by Tamani Wells. It would stay that way until the fifth when the Aztecs took advantage of three UC Davis errors and scored five unearned runs. The big blow in the inning came off the bat of Erin Floros, who belted a three-run homer to cap off the frame.
In the bottom of the fifth, Deanna Menapace drew a one-out walk. With two outs, Jenny Corbett doubled to put runners at second and third. Espiritu followed with a double to left center to drive in both base runners and make it a 6-2 game. San Diego State scored two more runs in the seventh.
Jessica Hancock suffered the loss for UC Davis, despite allowing just three earned runs in seven innings of work. She scattered seven hits and struck out six with six walks.
UC Davis concludes the tournament Sunday when it faces at Winthrop at 9:30 a.m.
