PORTLAND, Ore. - In a closely contested match, UC Davis was defeated by Montana State, 4-3, Sunday in men's tennis action at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center in Portland, Ore. MSU took two of three matches in doubles before holding on for three more points in singles. UC Davis, which is ranked No. 75 in the latest ITA poll, drops to 4-2 overall. The Bobcats improved to 2-3.
In doubles, the first match to finish was at No. 3 where Justin Hauck and Pawel Turzanski defeated the Aggies' Hunter Lee and Tyler Lee, 8-4. The Bobcats clinched the match's first point when Jakub Dybala and Kyle McDonald posted an 8-4 victory at No. 1 over Daniel Elefant and Michael Reiser. The final doubles match went to the Aggies as Henri Landes and Justin Garcia defeated Fletcher Keyes and David Kovas, 8-6.
In singles, MSU took a 2-0 lead when Turzanski defeated Nick Lopez, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3. The advantage went to 3-0 after McDonald posted a straight sets victory over Reiser at No. 1.
That's when the momentum began to shift to UC Davis. The next match to finish was at No. 2 as Landes continued his hot hand with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Dybala to make it 3-1. Landes won the tiebreaker, 7-0, to put the Aggies on the board.
At No. 4, Garcia defeated Keyes, 6-4, 6-3, to get UC Davis within 3-2. The match was tied at 3-3 when Tyler Lee finished off Kovas at No. 6 by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
At the same time, Elefant was battling Hauck to a third set at No. 5. Elefant won the first set, 6-3, before Hauck came back with a 7-5 win in the second set. The match-clinching third set went to the Bobcat, 6-2.
UC Davis is next in action Feb. 9 when it plays its first Big West Conference match at Pacific.
