DAVIS, Calif. - Junior catcher Deanna Menapace collected three hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead UC Davis to an 8-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield in the Day 2 opener of the UC Davis Invitational women's softball tournament at La Rue Field Saturday. The Aggies then dropped their second game to Providence, 2-1, when Friar first baseman Mary Rose Sheehy rapped out a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
UC Davis moves to 8-6 for the season.
The remainder of Saturday's slate, consisting of exhibition games with the Dutch national team, was cancelled due to rain.
Aggie junior Jessica Hancock earned the shutout victory in Saturday's opener, allowing just three singles and striking out nine in six innings. She fanned two in the first inning and struck out the side in the second, while coaxing nine groundouts from the CSUB hitters.
UC Davis took the lead in the first inning on Ashley Johnson's two-out RBI double, then extended the margin to 2-0 when Erin Emde drove in Menapace on a single to center. The Aggies tacked on two runs in the fifth, capitalizing on a fielding error by Roadrunner shortstop Kristen Archuleta. Menapace's third single scored both Lindsey Jones and Michelle Espiritu to double her team's lead to 4-0.
Emde led off the sixth inning with double to right-center, then Jones sent a two-run double down the third-base line to bump the Aggie advantage to 6-0. Jones later scored thanks to a wild pitch and an error, then Stauder put the eight-run rule into effect when her groundout scored Michelle Espiritu.
The UC Davis bats were silenced in Saturday's second game, as sophomore Danielle Bertolette earned a complete-game win for Providence. Junior Julie Stauder had three hits in the game, while Jones' RBI double gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth (UC Davis played the game as the visiting team).
The Friars tied the contest in the sixth as sophomore outfielder Katelyn Revens led off the action with a bunt single, then scored on a Christy Becker double. Aggie starter Alex Holmes escaped the jam by fanning Gina Rossi then drawing a groundout by catcher Teresa Bertels.
Providence threatened again early in the seventh as Jennifer Maccio ripped a double to the left-center gap, then Justin Stratton singled her to third. Hancock, in relief of Holmes, hit Jenna Garcia with a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Two batters later, Sheehy scored the game-winning hit to lift the Friars to their second win of the season.
Saturday's action was halted during an exhibition game between Providence and the Dutch nationals. The Friars held a 3-1 lead behind Sheehy's two-run double in the third, but the Netherlands had two runners aboard when the rainfall forced the stoppage. Saturday's finale between UC Davis and the Dutch was also cancelled.
The UC Davis Invitational picks up on Sunday morning with a 9 a.m. between Providence and Cal State Bakersfield.
