GOLD RIVER, Calif. - UC Davis' Tyler Lee beat Sacramento State's Ronan Conlon 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 singles but the host Hornets won the remaining five singles matches along with the doubles point for a 6-1 nonconference men's tennis victory on Saturday afternoon at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center.
UC Davis, which had won two of its last three matches including a 4-3 win over Gonzaga on Friday, fell to 6-5. Sacramento State upped its record to 3-2 while also earning five points in the race for this year's Causeway Cup all-sports competition between the schools. The Aggies still lead, 40-20.
The Hornets started strong on Saturday, capturing the doubles point after sweeping the three matches. However, the Aggies provided stiff competition at the No. 2 position where Daniel Elefant and Michael Reiser lost a close 6-5 (7-5) matchup to Holden Ching and Conlon.
Wins in the first three singles matches to finish clinched the overall team win for the Hornets as Kiryl Harbatsiuk at No. 1, Artur Klimenka at No. 3, and Holden Ching at No. 4 all won in straight sets. Anton Stryhas won 6-3, 6-4 over Reisier at the No. 2 spot for another Sacramento State win before Lee got UC Davis on the board with his convincing 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6. The victory was his third straight and was the only singles match on Saturday to feature a shutout.
UC Davis was scheduled to host Sonoma State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Marya Welch Tennis Center but that has been cancelled because of the weather and will be rescheduled at a later time. The Aggies' next scheduled match is next Saturday at Saint Mary's.
