CORVALLIS/EUGENE, Ore. - The UC Davis wrestling team defeated Oregon, 24-16, at McArthur Court in Eugene and then lost a few hours later to Oregon State, 23-12, in Corvallis to earn a split in Pacific-10 duals during Friday's trip through the state of Oregon.
The win over the Ducks snapped a five-match losing streak while the loss to the defending Pac-10 champion Beavers gives the Aggies an overall dual mark of 3-6 and 2-6 in conference.
Juniors Marcos Orozco and Tyler Bernacchi, and redshirt freshman Abe Otrambo all went 2-0 on the day. Otrambo has now won four consecutive matches dating back to his major decision over Cal State Bakersfield last weekend. Orozco bumped his winning streak to three and has now won a team-high 22 overall matches. For Bernacchi, it was his first duals back after sitting out last weekend due to injuries.
The Aggies jumped out to an early 6-0 against Oregon State with two straight decisions by Orozco at 125 and senior Francisco Manriquez at 133. But the Beavers would win the next four matches, one by major decision and one by forfeit at 165, to take a commanding 16-6 lead.
The two teams then traded wins through the remaining four matches, which included a major decision by Kyle Bressler at 184 to secure the win for the Beavers. Bernacchi stopped the OSU run at 174 pounds with an 8-5 decision. After Bressler's major decision at 184, Otrambo earned the last Aggie win at 197 with a 5-0 shutout.
Earlier in the day the Aggies defeated the Ducks at McArthur Court, 24-16. UC Davis got falls from sophomore Jeff Prentice and junior Nexi Delgado to snap a five-match losing streak. Orozco opened the dual with a 6-0 shutout at 125 and Delgado won by fall in 1:23 at 141 pounds to give the Aggies a 9-3 lead.
The Ducks took their only lead of 13-12 following a major decision by Kyle Bounds at 157 and an Aggie forfeit at 165 pounds. UC Davis then rolled to four straight wins, one of which was a pin from Prentice at 184 in 1:56. Redshirt Barrett Abel rounded out the Aggie wins with a 9-6 decision at 149.
Oregon, who is in its final season of collegiate wrestling, won two of its four matches in overtime and claimed another win off a forfeit. Bounds' major decision at 157 pounds was the only convincing Duck victory on the day.
The Aggies return home to The Pavilion next weekend and close out the regular season with two exciting matches. The first match is Friday at 6 p.m. against Cal State Fullerton in the Beauty and the Beast promotion alongside Aggie gymnastics. They then welcome 34-time NCAA Division I champion Okalahoma State on Sunday at noon.
