DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis senior forward Quincy Amarikwa converted a game-clinching goal off a spectacular bicycle kick during a 2-0 shutout over then-No. 13 UC Santa Barbara at Harder Stadium on Oct. 11. On Wednesday, Soccer America rewarded Amarikwa's incredible strike by naming it the 2008 College Goal of the Year.
The ball was served up from fellow senior Ian Conklin in the box and Amarikwa sprawled backwards and met the ball at the height of his bicycle kick. The shot sailed into the upper left corner of the goal past a diving Gaucho goalkeeper to awe the Gaucho crowd. The Aggies' shutout over UC Santa Barbara marked the first time in 31 games that the Gauchos had failed to score a goal. UC Davis would shutout Santa Barbara again later in the month to become the first Big West Conference team to hold the Gauchos scoreless twice in one season.
The video footage of the goal is currently accessible on the front page of the Aggies website. Go to the All-Access video player to the right of the headlines and click the play button.
UC Davis completed one of its most successful seasons in program history with a second NCAA Division I Championship tournament appearance where they advanced to the second round.
