SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Kyle Montgomery scored a goal just 22 seconds into the contest, and Jacob Hustedt added another score in the 32nd minute to lead Cal Poly to a 2-0 shutout victory over No. 8 UC Davis in a Big West Conference men's soccer game in front of 2,817 fans at Alex G. Spanos Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Shut out for only the second time this season, the Aggies fall to 12-3-3 overall and 4-2-3 in conference play. The Mustangs improve to 10-4-4 overall and move into first place in the conference standings at 5-2-2.
Cal Poly goalkeeper Eric Branagan-Franco saved a game-high five shots, including a penalty kick from Dylan Curtis in the 79th minute, to keep the Aggies scorless for the first time since Sept. 5. UC Davis earned a 2-0 victory over Cal Poly last month when the Mustangs visited Aggie Soccer Stadium.
The Mustangs scored 22 seconds into the contest when Montgomery collected a pass from Hustedt in the box and shot it from nine yards out. Hustedt added a goal of his own at 31:02 off a pass from Daniel Cumming in front of the goal.
The Aggies took one more shot than the Mustangs, 11-10, and had five shots on goal despite being held scoreless. UC Davis also held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks and outshot the Mustangs 6-3 in the second half.
Senior Quincy Amarikwa led UC Davis with two shots on frame and three overall. Montgomery had a game-high shot total of four.
UC Davis goalkeeper Ryan McCowan managed four saves in goal.
The Aggies close out their regular season on Saturday by hosting No. 13 UC Santa Barbara at 11:00 a.m.
