FULLERTON, Calif. - Senior forward Quincy Amarikwa scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season off a free kick in the 49th minute, and 13th-ranked UC Davis extended its unbeaten streak to nine games with a 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference men's soccer game at Titan Stadium Wednesday night.
The Aggies improve to 10-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference, while the Titans are now 3-9 overall and 0-2 in conference play. It is the fifth shutout of the season for the Aggies, which leads the conference.
The game was halted for 45 minutes early in the first half when Aggie midfielder Ahmad Hatifie was injured on a sliding tackle. The Titans were issued a red card and played a man down the remainder of the game. A second red card late in the second half gave the Aggies' an 11-9 advantage.
After a scoreless first half, Amarikwa netted the only goal of the game at 48:53 as he converted a free kick from just outside the penalty box. Amarikwa, who's 10 goals are a career-high, led all players with seven shots, four which were on frame.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan McCowan and the Aggie defense picked up their second consecutive shutout and fifth of the season. McCowan needed only one save in the shutout.
UC Davis outshot the Titans by a 14-4 count and fired a total of five shots on goal. Ryan Kaylor had the lone Titan shot on goal, while goalkeeper Kevin Puder tallied four saves.
The Aggies return to action Saturday night as they travel to No. 15 UC Santa Barbara. That game begins at 7 p.m. and will feature a live audio stream through the Gauchos' student radio station at kcsb.org.
