DAVIS, Calif. - Marisa Boge gave UC Davis all of the offense it would need as the Aggies defeated Cal Poly, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in a Big West Conference women's soccer game at Aggie Stadium. The contest also marked the final home game of the season for UC Davis as five seniors were honored prior to kick-off. The victory improves UC Davis to 7-6-3 overall and 2-4-1 in the Big West.
The loss was just the second of the season for the Mustangs in conference play, and they dropped to 9-8-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the Big West.
The game was scoreless through the midway point of the first half with the Mustangs putting consistent pressure on the Aggie defense. Cal Poly had the game's first seven shots, but none posed a significant threat. In the 30th minute, Lisa Kemp fired the first shot for the Aggies that missed wide.
Later in the 30th minute, Kemp found Boge on the left side. The junior pulled the keeper out just enough to fire a shot into the right corner of the goal from about 10 yards out to give UC Davis a 1-0 lead. It was Boge's team-leading fourth goal of the year while Kemp registered her team-leading fourth assist.
From that point on, the UC Davis defense thwarted Cal Poly's efforts to tie the game. The Mustangs outshot UC Davis, 15-9, for the game. Lisa Kemp led UC Davis with three shots.
"It's huge," said UC Davis head coach MaryClaire Robinson on defeating the Mustangs. "We haven't beaten Cal Poly since we've been in the Big West. It wasn't pretty. It wasn't brilliant, but it was effective and we got it done."
Sarah Peters picked up her fourth shutout of the season for UC Davis and helped anchor a defense that remains the only unit in the Big West that hasn't allowed more than two goals in a game all season. Peters finished Sunday's action with two saves.
Prior to the game, UC Davis honored its senior class as Gabina Bohlman, Danielle Contro, Stephanie Schmidt, Molly Scott and Brianna Tsui were recognized. The veteran contingent helped UC Davis finish its 2008 home schedule with two wins out of its last three games.
"I'm really pleased. It's well-deserved," said Robinson. "I think our senior class has done a great job of helping us clear a couple of hurdles this year and prepare us for the next year, as well."
UC Davis is next in action Nov. 2 when it plays at Pacific in its regular season finale.
