RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Xavier Perez scored with less than three minutes remaining to help lift UC Riverside to a 2-1 upset over No. 7 UC Davis in a Big West Conference men's soccer game at UCR Soccer Stadium Saturday night.
The loss snaps the Aggies' 11-game unbeaten streak and drops them to 11-2-2 overall and 3-1-2 in conference. The Highlanders pick up their first win in conference to improve to 1-4-0 and 4-9-1 overall.
The Highlanders put the Aggies down early for the second consecutive game with a goal by Nathan Paterson in the 31st minute. Paterson collected a deflected ball and put it past Aggie goalkeeper Ryan McCowan.
The Aggies were issued a red card in the 52nd minute and played a man down the remainder of the game. Despite the disadvantage, UC Davis tied things up at 1-1 in the 78th minute when senior Dylan Curtis converted a penalty kick for his third score of the season.
The game-winning score came at 87:11 off another deflection in front of the Aggie goal that Perez was able to convert.
The two teams took 16 shots each with the Highlanders holding the advantage in shots on goal with nine. UC Davis managed six shots on frame. McCowan finished with six saves while UCR goalie Ryan Schmitz had five.
Curtis and sophomore Miles Hadley each tied a game high with three shots. Hadley and junior Paul Marcoux also tied the game high with two shots on frame.
Joel Crompton and Zach Walker each had three shots for UCR while Joel Garcia managed two shots on goal.
Along with identical shots, the teams also had five corner kicks. There were a total of 43 fouls, four yellow cards and the one red card.
UC Davis returns home to Aggie Soccer Stadium for two conference games next week. They begin the week on Wednesday against Cal State Northridge at 3:00 p.m.
