STANFORD, Calif. - Desiree Stone won twice on Friday to open play at the ITA Northwest Championships in Stanford. The junior posted a come-from-behind victory in the first round before winning in straight sets in the next. A total of six Aggies are taking part in the annual championships.
In the round of 128, Stone was down a set to Fresno State's Danon Beatty before winning the next two by identical 6-1 scores. The win set her up with a round of 64 battle against San Francisco's Cecilia Gratian. The Aggie junior had a much easier time in that match, winning in straight sets by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
In other first round action, the Aggies' Randi Schuler disposed of Portland's Tessa Trunnel, 6-0, 6-1. She retired from her next match against Washington State's Aleksandra Cekic after winning the first set and trailing 5-2 in the second.
Herzyl Legaspi, Emma Shapiro, Jenna Kappel and Jessica Harris also took part in first round action.
In doubles, Schuler and Stone fought off five match points on their way to a 9-8 victory over WSU's Cekic and Elisabeth Fournier. The Aggie duo won the tiebreaker, 10-8, before falling in the next round to Saint Mary's Alexandra Poorta and Claire Soper.
Saturday's action features Stone in the singles round of 32 as well as consolation singles matches.
