MORAGA, Calif. - UC Davis had an impressive start to the Saint Mary's Invitational by winning a combined nine singles and doubles matches on Friday's opening day. Senior Jessica Harris went a perfect 3-0 by winning her singles match and two more times in doubles. The breakdown on Friday for UC Davis included five wins in singles and four more in doubles.
Harris was one of three Aggies to win in the singles white draw. In the round of 32, she defeated Washington's Vanja Radunovic, 6-4, 6-4. Dahra Zamudio posted a win in her Aggie debut in the same round with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Portland's Stefanie Doolittle. Sophomore Sidney Brady was a straight sets winner over Portland's Tessa Trunnel.
Addition singles victories came in the blue draw's round of 16. Freshman Noelle Eades defeated Nevada's Shannon Cassidy, 6-2, 6-3, while Shawdee Rouhafza cruised past San Jose State's Cassandra Borjon, 6-1, 6-1.
Harris teamed with senior Jenna Kappel to advance to the semifinals of the white draw. The duo defeated Portland's Lauren Summers and Trunnel, 8-3, in the round of 16. They posted an 8-5 victory in the quarterfinals over Gonzaga's Clare Dodge and Aglaya Kokurina. In the same draw, Legaspi and Zamudio advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-3 win over SJSU's Silvana Dukic and Sanda Hadzisabic before suffering a defeat to Washington's Aleksandra Krsljanin and Samantha Smith.
Randi Schuler and Desiree Stone started the red draw with an 8-6 win over Lauren Megale and Klaudia Wlodarczyk of Boise State in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Stanford's Logan Hansen and Carolyn McVeigh needed to win the final three games to get past Schuler and Stone, 9-7. The comeback included erasing a match point with the Aggie tandem up 7-6.
The SMC Invitational continues Saturday before concluding on Sunday at the Korth Tennis Complex.
