GOLD RIVER, Calif. - UC Davis defeated Buffalo, 4-3, Monday afternoon in men's tennis action at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center in Gold River. The win improves the Aggies to 3-0 on the year while the Bulls dropped their second straight 4-3 decision and fall to 0-3. Senior Henri Landes posted what turned out to be the clinching match for UC Davis. The match was originally scheduled to be played at the Marya Welch Tennis Center on campus but was moved indoors due to the weather.
The match started out with singles, and the Aggies' Tyler Lee put UC Davis on the board with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Alexis Lluis at No. 6. The Bulls tied it at No. 1 when Nikesh Singh Panthlia posted a straight sets win over Michael Reiser. Buffalo then took a 2-1 lead with a win by Marcelo Mazzetto at No. 3.
Those would be the last of the Bulls' victories in singles as Daniel Elefant followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Eric Rothstein, which tied the score at 2-2. Shortly after Elefant's win, Justin Garcia gave the Aggies a 3-2 edge after disposing of Octavian Stane at No. 4 by a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Meanwhile, at No. 2, Landes was battling Kirill Kolomytes. The Aggie outlasted the Bull, 7-5, in the first set and went to a tiebreaker in the second set. Landes prevailed, 7-2, in the tiebreaker, which gave UC Davis the decisive fourth point.
Buffalo claimed its final point of the day by winning two of the three matches in doubles.
"The seniors are really showing leadership with their intensity," said UC Davis head coach Daryl Lee. "I'm please with how well we've started as a team this season and look forward to getting some good work in this week in preparation for Saint Mary's this weekend."
Landes, Garcia, and Elefant represent this year's Aggie senior class and are a combined 7-0 in the team's three dual matches.
UC Davis is next in action Jan. 27 when it takes on Saint Mary's in Moraga. It's the first of five straight road matches for the Aggies, who do not play at home again until Feb. 16.
