SANTA CLARA, Calif. - UC Davis put together an impressive opening day to its 2008 season with wins over No. 75 Santa Clara and UC Santa Cruz. The Aggies began the day with a 4-1 victory over host SCU before defeating UCSC, 5-1. Henri Landes went 2-0 at No. 2 while Tyler Lee won both of his matches at No. 6. The wins give the Aggies a 2-0 record heading into Monday's home opener.
UC Davis started quickly against Santa Clara by winning the first two doubles matches that finished. Landes and Nick Lopez defeated Justin Wong and Charlie Burke, 8-2, at No. 3 before Tyler Lee and Justin Garcia clinched the match's first point with a win at No. 2. Landes, Daniel Elefant, and Lee all won in straight sets to give UC Davis the four points it needed for the win.
Without much of a break, the Aggies took on UC Santa Cruz and started off by dropping the doubles point. Trailing 1-0 heading into singles, UC Davis won five times to claim the 5-1 victory.
The top of the lineup for UC Davis had to fight through three-set victories. Michael Reiser rallied from a one-set deficit at No. 1 to defeat Jared Kamel, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Landes won the first set at No. 2 before holding on for a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory. Lopez was a straight-sets winner at No. 3, as was Justin Garcia and Tyler Lee at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively.
UC Davis is next in action Monday when it hosts Buffalo in its home opener. The contest with the Bulls is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
