DAVIS, Calif. -- Boise State earned two consecutive major decisions and won six of the 10 matches to defeat UC Davis, 23-15, in a Pacific-10 wrestling dual at Hickey Gymnasium Saturday night.
UC Davis is now 3-3 overall and 1-3 against conference opponents. The Broncos, who are currently others receiving votes in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) national rankings, move to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in conference. Boise State also defeated Stanford at Hickey Gym last night.
Redshirt freshman Ricky Alcala won his second straight sudden victory dual match in as many nights and third of the season with a 4-2 decision over Nick Smith in the heavyweight match. With the score tied at 1-1 after three periods, the match went into four overtime periods before Alcala recorded a takedown with nine seconds remaining in the second sudden victory period. Both wrestlers scored escapes in the previous two overtime periods to push the match in the second sudden victory. Alcala is now a perfect 6-0 in dual matches this season.
Junior Nexi Delgado also recorded his second dual win in as many nights with another thrilling decision. Much like the pervious night against Stanford, Delgado rallied after a tough first period to reel off six unanswered points and erase over two minutes of riding time. That run included a three-point nearfall at the conclusion of the second period. He finished the match with two takedowns en route to a 10-4 decision.
Fellow junior Marcos Orozco rounded out the Aggie wins on the mat with an 11-5 decision in the 125-pound finale. After taking an injury time out and letting his opponent ride him out to end the first period, Orozco rebounded to to score a three-point nearfall, a takedown and a reversal to win the match.
Redshirt freshman Barrett Abel was awarded a victory by forfeit at 149 pounds to give the Aggies six points.
Boise State started the dual with a win at 133 pounds, but the Aggies responded with wins by Delgado at 141 and Abel at 149 to claim a 9-3 lead. The Broncos then rolled to consecutive major decisions by No. 11 Tyler Sherfey at 157 and No. 19 Kurth Swartz at 165 to reclaim the lead at 11-9.
Two more decisions at 174 and 197, and a forfeit win at 184 put the dual out of reach and secured the Broncos' third conference win of the season.
UC Davis hosts is third consecutive Pac-10 dual at HIckey Gym on Wednesday when they welcome Cal State Bakersfield at 7 p.m.
