NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge defeated UC Davis, 82-47, Thursday night in Big West Conference action at The Matadome. David Carter posted career highs for the Aggies with 22 points and nine rebounds. Mark Payne added nine points and seven rebounds. Shane Hanson and Vince Oliver each scored five. Calvin Chitwood and Deon Tresvant led the Matadors with 14. The loss drops the Aggies to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the Big West. Cal State Northridge stayed perfect in the conference at 3-0 and improved to 11-3 overall.
UC Davis opened with the early lead as Payne started the game's scoring with a steal and a fast break dunk at the 18:23 mark. Carter sank a three-pointer with 14:46 left in the half to make it 7-5 Aggies.
Cal State Northridge regained the lead and led 11-9 when it went on a 9-0 run. The stretch ended on a pair of free throws by Calvin Chitwood as the Matadors led 20-9 with 9:29 left in the half.
Hanson completed a three-point play in the Aggies' next possession to cut the deficit to 20-12 before CSUN ran off another seven points for a 27-12 lead with just under six minutes left in the half. UC Davis was able to get as close as nine before Cal State Northridge went to the half leading 35-22.
CSUN led 41-30 three minutes into the second half before going on a 12-0 run, upping the advantage to 53-30 with 12:37 left in the game. After a three-point play by Oliver, the Matadors went on an 18-2 blitz to take a commanding 71-35 lead with 5:33 remaining.
"They're not the most advantageous match-up for us," said UC Davis head coach Gary Stewart. "Their style of play and their depth wore us down. It's certainly a bump in the road, but you can't let it divert you. We have to have a better response on Saturday."
Carter's previous career-high was 19 on two previous occasions. The last time was on March 2, 2006. His previous high in rebounds was five. He also made a career-high three three-pointers in the loss.
CSUN shot 52 percent for the game, including 9-for-20 from beyond the arc. The Aggies shot 33 percent and were 4-for-19 from long-range. The Matadors took advantage of 25 UC Davis turnovers while committing 14.
