DAVIS, Calif. - Chris Leer recorded his second straight game with a goal, and Paul Marcoux and Ian Conklin each tallied their first goals of the season to give UC Davis a 3-1 victory over Oregon State in the home opener at Aggie Soccer Stadium Friday night.
The win is the Aggies' first over the Beavers and improves their record to 2-1 while Oregon State, who held a 7-3 shots on goal advantage, falls to 1-2.
"Any win at this level is a good win," said UC Davis head coach Dwayne Shaffer. "This is a really great win for us because it comes against a Pac-10 team. It also helps that we are now 2-1 to start off the season."
Brian Wickers had another solid game in goal for UC Davis as he recorded six saves, five of which came in the second half, to earn his second consecutive victory in only his fourth career start.
The Aggies got the scoring started early as Marcoux headed in a corner kick from Dan Campbell just under two minutes into the contest.
"Part of our mission statement is to start fast," said Shaffer. "We've done that in the past, but were just unable to finish. It's always good to get an early lead against a tough team like Oregon State because it changes how we are able to play the game."
Leer notched his second goal of the season five minutes before the half off a cross from Derek LeBon to put the Aggies up 2-0. The goal would stand up as the eventual game-winner.
Both teams managed to get off three shots before halftime.
The Beavers applied pressure to the Aggies' defense to begin the second half and had a total of six shots on goal. They finally broke through in the 68th minutes as Brett Gardner got behind his defender and poked in a cross from the left post from Nick Webb.
Conklin and the Aggies answered back just five minutes later as he took a shot from the top of the box off a pass from Sule Anibaba to put the Aggies up for good, 3-1. Anibaba has now recorded seven points in the last two games.
The Beavers outshot the Aggies by a mark of 12-9 and managed seven shots on goal. They also held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-3.
UC Davis returns to Aggie Soccer Stadium Sunday to host Portland in the final game of the Copa de Causeway. Game time is set of 1:00 p.m.
