Final Stats
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior midfielders Nicholas Lind and Julien Cerutti each scored their first goals of the season and sophomore forward Paul Marcoux tallied his fourth to give UC Davis a 3-0 shutout victory in a Causeway Cup men's soccer game against Sacramento State at Hornet Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
The victory gives the Aggies, who are now unbeaten in six consecutive games, five points in the Causeway Cup battle and pushes their record to 5-1-1. The Hornets are still winless on the season, 0-7-1. The win also marks UC Davis' third victory over Sacramento State since beginning the Causeway Cup in 2004-05.
Marcoux started the Aggie scoring early in the game as he notched his fourth goal of the season in the sixth minute off an assist from junior midfielder Dylan Curtis. Marcoux received the cross and put it off his right foot past Hornet goalkeeper Ryan Kenny for the only score of the first half. Both Marcoux and Curtis managed to get off two shots apiece during the contest. Both of Marcoux's shots were on frame.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Lind beat Kenny one on one to notch the unassisted score and put the Aggies up 2-0. Lind totaled a game-high four shots during the contest.
Cerutti capped the UC Davis scoring in the 85th minute as he tallied his first collegiate goal off a Hornet turnover in front of the box.
UC Davis, who has now scored 23 goals in the first seven games of the season, outshot the Hornets 18-5 and held a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks.
Chris Leer, Sule Anibaba and Quincy Amarikwa also managed shots on goal as the Aggies held the advantage in that category as well, 7-1.
Senior Brian Wickers made one save in goal to earn his fifth victory and second shutout of the year.
UC Davis returns home to Aggie Soccer Stadium this Saturday for their first official Big West game when they take on defending national champion and No. 14-ranked UC Santa Barbara at 4:00 p.m.
