BEAVERTON, Ore. - Portland State defeated UC Davis, 2-1, Friday afternoon in women's soccer action in Beaverton, Ore. Courtney Brown scored the lone goal for the Aggies, who fell to 4-3-0 on the year. With the win, the Viks improved to 4-3-0. PSU scored both of its goals in the first half.
Juli Edwards was the first to put the Viks on the board when she connected from 25 yards out in the 18th minute for her first goal of the season. The score remained 1-0 until late in the first half when Tarah Authier scored from short-range to put the Viks up 2-0 with just under four minutes to play in the half.
Brown was able to cut the deficit in half in the 68th minute when she scored on a header that skimmed off a defender and into the net. It was the first goal of the redshirt freshman's career, and it pulled UC Davis to within 2-1.
That's as close as the Aggies would get as the Viks were able to keep the Aggies out of the net for the remainder of the game. Viks' keeper Rachel Jarvis finished with nine saves. Six of those came in the second half.
UC Davis outshot Portland State, 16-10, including an 11-4 advantage in the second half. Brown, Marisa Boge and Samantha Faber each had three shots for the Aggies. Jordan Martin finished with two.
UC Davis returns home to host Cal State Fullerton Sunday afternoon in the Big West Conference opener for both teams. It will be the first of five straight home games for the Aggies. The contest is scheduled to start at noon at Aggie Soccer Stadium.
