BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior driver Nick Arrigo scored four goals to lead UC Davis to an 8-6 win over Santa Clara in the second of his team's two games at the Northern California Open collegiate men's water polo tournament at Cal's Spieker Aquatics Complex Saturday. The Aggies lost their tournament opener to Pepperdine, 13-5, to set up the evening matchup against their Western Water Polo Association foe.
UC Davis, ranked eighth in this week's National Collegiate Top 20 poll, move to 4-4 for the season.
Junior Adam Bennett added three goals in the win over the Broncos, while senior Joseph Smith chipped in a score. Senior Mike McGee had eight saves in the nightcap, totalling 19 for the day. Liam Farrell scored two goals for SCU, which trailed 5-2 at the halftime break.
In the Aggies' Saturday opener, Joseph Smith scored two of his team's five goals in a 13-5 loss to sixth-ranked Pepperdine. UC Davis trailed 6-2 at the half and 10-3 through three quarters in falling to the Waves for a second time this season. Junior attacker Grant Miller led Pepperdine with four goals while J.P. MacDonell added three.
Freshman Cory Lyle, junior Alex Dewar and junior Danny Driscoll also had goals in the loss against the Waves.
The Northern California Open continues through Sunday. The Aggies engage in a rematch with WWPA rival Loyola Marymount at noon. The game will take place at Miramonte High School's Bill Brown Aquatics Center. The winner of that game takes on either UC San Diego or Pacific for the tourney's ninth-place game.
