LA JOLLA, Calif. - Junior hole setter Adam Lindsay scored an advantage goal with 39 seconds remaining to lift UC Davis to a 7-6 upset over 10th-ranked Loyola Marymount in Saturday's early action at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational men's water polo tournament at Canyonview Aquatics Center. The Aggies later fell in a 13-6 battle to sixth-ranked Pepperdine to post a first-day split at the tourney.
UC Davis, ranked in a tie for 11th in the preseason national poll, opens the season at 1-1.
The Aggies held a 5-3 lead late in the third period against the Lions, then surrendered three straight goals in a span of a minute to fall behind by a 6-5 deficit heading into the fourth. Senior Joseph Smith hit a 6-on-5 goal with 5:18 in the fourth then defended a short-handed situation with two minutes remaining. In the final minute, LMU sophomore Ryan Fair was called for his second exclusion, setting the stage for Lindsay's heroics.
Junior Adam Hewko led the Waves with three goals in the 13-6 win over UC Davis. J.P. MacDonnell and Matt Digges added two goals for the winning cause. Junior Adam Bennett led all Aggie scorers with two first-half scores in the nightcap against the Waves, totalling three for the day.
Pepperdine held a 5-1 lead after the first quarter then stretched the margin to 7-1 on goals by MacDonnell and Watson early in the second period. Lindsay and senior Jesse Tweed scored to help cut the deficit to 8-4 by halftime, but the Waves piled on five more goals after the break to seal the win.
UC Davis opens Sunday's action with a game against Cal Baptist at 8 a.m. UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and Pepperdine were among the undefeated teams in Day 1 action at the tournament.
