Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis defeated Kent State, 1-0, Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams at Aggie Soccer Stadium. Rochelle VanBuskirk scored the lone goal of the game in the 57th minute as UC Davis won the first game of its Division I era. The Aggies outshot the Golden Flashes, 17-5, including an 11-1 advantage in the first half.

The goal was the second of VanBuskirk's career as the sophomore angled a shot from about 15 yards out on the left side that squeezed past the outstretched hands of KSU keeper Kris Nelson in the right side of the net. Seconds before, VanBuskirk gained possession of the ball after a deflected KSU pass across the middle.

Gabina Bohlman led UC Davis with five shots, and Dayna Dumont finished with four. Stephanie Schmidt fired three shots while VanBuskirk had two.

Sarah Peters, a redshirt freshman, picked up the shutout for UC Davis in goal. A stingy Aggie defense prevented Peters from facing any shots on goal.

The temperature at the start of the contest was 97 degrees.

"It's great that we got a win. (Kent State) is a very tough team," said UC Davis head coach MaryClaire Robinson. "I think both teams felt the heat, and it was just one long drawn out battle."

UC Davis concludes its two-game homestand with a match-up with Fresno State Sunday afternoon at noon.
