DAVIS, Calif. - The University of California, Davis, which completed its four-year reclassification from NCAA Division II to Division I status during the recent 2006-07 academic year, became an official member of the Big West Conference on July 1.
UC Davis, which will compete in all 17 sports sponsored by the Big West, is the ninth member of the league and the fourth University of California institution, joining fellow UCs at Irvine, Riverside and Santa Barbara. Other league members are Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State and Pacific.
In 2003, the Aggies announced their intention to reclassify to Division I, accepting an invitation to join the Big West Conference. The 2003-04 academic year began a four-year transition period for the institution which completed its reclassification requirements this spring. The Aggies are awaiting an announcement from the NCAA this summer regarding its official status as an active member of Division I.
League members and their fans have become familar with UC Davis during the past two seasons with the Aggies playing full schedules in round-robin sports and participating as scoring members at the Big West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.
Beginning this fall, UC Davis will compete for Big West Conference Championships in baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, men's golf, women's golf, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, men's swimming and diving, women's swimming and diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, men's track and field, women's track and field and volleyball.
