SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - San Francisco defeated UC Davis, 5-2, Thursday afternoon in women's tennis action at the Golden Gate Park Courts in San Francisco. UC Davis won the doubles point before San Francisco rallied to win five of six matches in singles. The Aggies fall to 9-10 on the year while USF improves to 10-9. Emma Shapiro picked up a win in singles for UC Davis.
The first doubles match that finished went to the Dons as Lauren Hickey and Emma Taylor defeated Anita Athavale and Shapiro, 9-5, at No. 3. The Aggies' Robin Guier and Desiree Stone followed with an 8-6 victory over Joana Macedo and Jenny Sperry at No. 2. That left the outcome of No. 1 to decide the doubles point. Jenna Kappel and Herzyl Legaspi prevailed, 8-5, over Mylene Martin and Camille Pamart to give UC Davis an early 1-0 lead.
The momentum would shift in favor of the hosts in singles play. The first three matches to finish were decided in straight sets, and all went to USF. Taylor was the first to post a victory at No. 2. Sperry and Martin did the same at No. 4 and No. 3, respectively, to give the Dons a 3-1 lead. The clinching match came at No. 5 where Macedo outlasted Kappel, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5, in three sets to give USF a 4-1 lead.
Meanwhile, Shapiro was also engaged in a three-set battle at No. 6. The sophomore would ultimately prevail over Hickey, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2). Stone had early success against Pamart at No. 1 with a 7-6 victory in the first set. Pamart, however, came back to win the final two sets to win the match.
UC Davis is next in action April 14 when it begins a three-match homestand against Long Beach State.
