DAVIS, Calif. -- Cal State Fullerton defeated UC Davis, 6-2, Sunday afternoon at La Rue Field. The Titans scored four runs in the second inning and led 6-0 before holding off a late UC Davis rally. The win gives CSF a sweep of the three-game series. Deanna Menapace hit her team-leading 10th home run of the season for the Aggies, who dropped to 28-23-1 on the year.
Cal State Fullerton (30-18) did all of its damage in the second inning with two outs and no one on. After a pair of walks sandwiched around a single, Candice Baker drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the first run. Jessica Doucette followed with a bases-clearing double that gave the Titans a 4-0 lead.
Doucette was equally successful in the circle and did not allow a hit until a lead-off single by Ashley Johnson in the bottom of the fifth. At that point, with CSF leading 5-0, Doucette prevented any further trouble with a pop-up, foul out and ground out.
The Titans scored their final run in the sixth when Jenna Wheeler hit a solo home run to left field.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Mandy Salcido doubled. Menapace followed with a two-run homer to put the Aggies on the board trailing 6-2.
UC Davis did not go quietly in the seventh as Johnson led off with a walk. With two outs, Sarah Phleger and Julie Stauder each walked to load the bases before Doucette picked up her eighth strikeout of the game to clinch the victory.
CSF outhit UC Davis, 8-3. Doucette picked up the complete-game victory and improved to 5-5. Lindsay Tognetti suffered the loss for UC Davis, allowing five runs on three hits in four innings pitched with three strikeouts and four walks. Lauren Pieretti allowed one run on five hits in three innings of relief.
Sunday's series finale came after the two teams played a 20-inning doubleheader on Saturday that took just over six hours to complete.
UC Davis is next in action next weekend when it plays a three-game series at Long Beach State.
