OJAI, Calif. - Desiree Stone posted another straight sets victory for UC Davis on Friday at the Ojai Valley Tournament to advance to the quarterfinals. In addition, the Aggies' two doubles teams remained perfect with two more wins apiece to advance to Saturday's semifinal round. In all, the Aggies are 10-2 through two days of action in singles and doubles combined.
For Stone, who is the No. 4 seed in the draw, the victory was her fourth straight overall and 15th in singles action this season. Friday's match was against Occidental's Kelly Hasegawa. Stone edged Hasegawa, 6-4, in the first set before dominating, 6-0, in the second set. Stone will next face Pomona-Pitzer's Siobhan Finicane, the No. 5 seed, in a quarterfinal battle scheduled for Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The winner will take part in a semifinal match at 12:30 p.m.
Fresno Pacific's Audrey Laib, the No. 7 seed, needed three sets to get past the Aggies' Herzyl Legaspi. She defeated the UC Davis freshman, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. In another round-of-16 showdown, Robin Guier was defeated by Fresno Pacific's Anna Karavayeva, 6-2, 6-4.
UC Davis continued to shine in the doubles draw with a perfect 4-0 record on Friday. All of the victories came in straight sets. Anita Athavale and Emma Shapiro defeated PPC's Finicane and Rebecca Lange, 6-2, 7-5, in the round of 16 while Jenna Kappel and Legaspi had an easier time against Occidental's Marissa Cassman and Hasegawa, 6-1, 6-2.
In the doubles quarterfinals, Athavale and Shapiro defeated the fourth-seeded team of Marg Petrini and Ashley Strimple of Point Loma Nazarene, 6-2, 7-6 (2). Kappel and Legaspi also cruised to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Concordia's Laura Moses and Amanda Varela.
On Saturday, Athavale and Shapiro will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Stephanie Hammond and Lisa Steckmest in one semifinal match-up. The other contest will feature Kappel and Legaspi, the No. 3 seed in the draw, against top-seeded Karavayeva and Laib. Both matches are scheduled for 2 p.m.
