OJAI, Calif. - UC Davis was perfect in opening day action at the Ojai Valley Tournament, Thursday, in Ojai. All three of the Aggies' singles players and both doubles teams advanced with wins in the round of 32. Desiree Stone and Herzyl Legaspi each posted straight sets victories while Robin Guier came back from a one-set deficit to continue her near-perfect career record at the tournament. All three players were among 14 out of the field of 50 competitors who received byes in the opening round of 64. In doubles, Anita Athavale and Emma Shapiro advanced, as did Jenna Kappel and Legaspi.
Stone, the No. 4 seed in the draw, cruised past CSU Bakersfield's Kati Lynott, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to Friday's round of 16. Legaspi was also equally successful in defeating La Verne's Jessica Baker, 6-4, 6-3. Guier continued her late-season resurgence with a win at a tournament she has had all kinds of success at in the past. On Thursday, she overcame a 6-2 loss in the first set to Concordia's Michelle Esquivel by taking the final two sets, 6-1, 6-3, respectively. Guier won the tournament as a freshman and advanced to the semifinals last year. Her career mark at the tourmament stands at 11-1. The win is Guier's fourth straight this season.
Athavale and Shapiro had little trouble getting past Christy Baughman and Mary Buck of Master's College by cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win. Kappel and Legaspi needed to win a first set tiebreaker before outlasting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Yassie Entekhabi and Jessica Nagasako, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
On Friday, Stone will face Kelly Hasegawa from Occidental College in one of eight matches in the round of 16. Legaspi takes on the No. 7 seed, Audrey Laib, from Fresno Pacific. Guier will also have an FPU opponent when she plays against Anna Karavayeva, the No. 2 seed. All matches are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
In the doubles round of 16, Athavale and Shapiro will face FPU's Siobhan Finicane and Rebecca Lange at 12:30 p.m. Kappel and Legaspi will square off against Occidental's Marissa Cassman and Hasegawa at 2 p.m. Both the doubles round of 16 and quarterfinals are scheduled for Friday afternoon.
